The community consensus seems to have shifted twice since I last played. Would rather learn the right way now than build a bad habit.

Had the exact same issue. do the cheap diagnostic first — it costs nothing and rules out half the causes.

From experience, do not copy someone else’s config wholesale — start from defaults and adjust to your own setup.
That fixed it for me, at least.

Short version: the trick is to change one thing at a time and actually note the result before touching anything else.

Quick correction to the above: temperature is the usual culprit when performance degrades over a session.

The usual fix here is the wiki number is theoretical; real results are always a bit lower.
Report back once you have tried it.
