    I compared notes with a friend and we got completely different outcomes on similar hardware. Thanks in advance to anyone who chips in.

    In my testing, the averages hide the problem; look at the one percent lows instead.

    Others may have a cleaner method.

    Had the exact same issue. the safe move is the reversible one — you can always undo it if it makes things worse.

    Adding to the above: you get most of the benefit from the first adjustment; everything after that is marginal.
