Two settings appear to interact in a way the menu does not hint at. Any pointers appreciated, even partial ones.

This comes up a lot, so: it is almost always a setting rather than hardware, so try the free fixes before spending anything.

Only partly related, but check whether an overlay is running before blaming the game itself.
Others may have a cleaner method.

I went through this last month. the trick is to change one thing at a time and actually note the result before touching anything else.

Depends on your setup, but broadly do the cheap diagnostic first — it costs nothing and rules out half the causes.
