Apologies if this has been covered — the older threads are all locked. The in-game explanation and the actual behaviour do not appear to match.

What actually changed my results was slowing down and reading the tooltips properly instead of rushing. Still open to better approaches if anyone has one.

The usual fix here is verify the files before anything else; it catches more problems than people expect.
