   I have read the FAQ and it does not cover this case. The thing that keeps tripping me up is that everyone assumes you already know the basics, and the wiki is out of date.

   Turning one setting down fixed it, which raises more questions than it answers. Let me know if more detail would help.

   The usual fix here is the averages hide the problem; look at the one percent lows instead.

   I went through this last month. temperature is the usual culprit when performance degrades over a session.

   Adding to the above: the defaults are conservative on purpose, so there is usually headroom to gain.

    This comes up a lot, so: it depends heavily on your specific setup, so take any single number with a grain of salt.

    Others may have a cleaner method.

    Agreed on most of this, except do the cheap diagnostic first — it costs nothing and rules out half the causes.

    This is the bit people miss — if it only happens in one mode, that narrows it down considerably.

    From experience, do not copy someone else’s config wholesale — start from defaults and adjust to your own setup.

    Depends on your setup, but broadly nine times out of ten it is a driver or a background process, not the thing you suspect.

    Had the exact same issue. that behaviour is intentional, even though it is poorly explained in-game.

    Worth a shot before anything drastic.
