Story pacing discussion (spoiler-tagged) — second attempt
Posting this mostly so the next person searching finds an answer. It only shows up after about twenty minutes, which made it a nightmare to reproduce. Turning one setting down fixed it, which raises more questions than it answers. I can post logs or screenshots if that would make this easier to diagnose.

For what it is worth, temperature is the usual culprit when performance degrades over a session. That fixed it for me, at least.
