Half the advice online is a year out of date, which is why I wanted a current thread. Will update the post if I find a cleaner solution.

This is the bit people miss — it is almost always a setting rather than hardware, so try the free fixes before spending anything.

For what it is worth, the defaults are conservative on purpose, so there is usually headroom to gain.

Not the answer you want, but the wiki number is theoretical; real results are always a bit lower.

This comes up a lot, so: do the cheap diagnostic first — it costs nothing and rules out half the causes.

Depends on your setup, but broadly the safe move is the reversible one — you can always undo it if it makes things worse.
