Beginner tips before you start NTE

Spent most of the weekend on this and I am still not sure I understand it. Everything I read suggests it should just work, and for me it very much does not.

I tested it across a couple of sessions and the difference was smaller than the forums made it sound. Hopefully this saves someone else the afternoon it cost me.

This comes up a lot, so: check whether an overlay is running before blaming the game itself.
