I got it working once and then could not repeat it, which is the frustrating part. Would rather learn the right way now than build a bad habit.

From experience, the trick is to change one thing at a time and actually note the result before touching anything else.

This comes up a lot, so: the difference is real but small enough that you may not notice it while playing.

Had the exact same issue. keep a note of what you changed, otherwise you cannot undo it cleanly later.

The usual fix here is measure before and after, otherwise you are just guessing whether it helped.
