   I searched first and found three threads that all contradict each other. I compared notes with a friend and we got completely different outcomes on similar hardware.

   Not the answer you want, but nine times out of ten it is a driver or a background process, not the thing you suspect.

   Speaking as someone who got it wrong initially, temperature is the usual culprit when performance degrades over a session.

   This is the bit people miss — the defaults are conservative on purpose, so there is usually headroom to gain.

   Worth checking first: you get most of the benefit from the first adjustment; everything after that is marginal.

    Only partly related, but do not copy someone else’s config wholesale — start from defaults and adjust to your own setup.

    That fixed it for me, at least.
